E Ink retail technology comparison
ESL and E-paper POP Displays: Different Roles on the Same Retail Shelf
Electronic Shelf Labels and E-paper POP displays can both use E Ink technology, but they serve different purposes. ESL manages shelf information. E-paper POP communicates the brand and campaign. They are not replacements for each other; they can work side by side.
Same E Ink foundation. Different display architectures. Complementary roles in retail.

At a glance
Two roles on the same retail shelf
Electronic Shelf Label (ESL)
The shelf information layer. An ESL is a compact digital price tag that presents price, SKU, barcode, promotion or stock information and is commonly connected to a retailer's central management system.
E-paper POP Display
The brand communication layer. An E-paper POP display combines changing electronic paper segments with printed campaign artwork and a custom structure to attract attention and explain a selected product.
Inside the display
The same E Ink technology, built differently
Both products share the reflective, paper-like appearance, wide viewing angles and bistable low-power behavior associated with E Ink. The key difference is how the image is constructed: graphic ESLs normally use a pixel matrix, while SoliDisplay E-paper POP uses flexible, predefined segments.
ESL display architecture
Active-matrix dot-matrix E-paper
Individually controlled pixels can render changing prices, text, barcodes and graphics in monochrome or selected color E Ink platforms.
SoliDisplay POP architecture
Flexible segmented E-paper
Predefined black-and-white segments create planned visual changes and can be shaped around printed campaign artwork and the POP structure.

Working together
Designed to work together
The ESL below a product can keep its price and product data accurate, while an E-paper POP display beside it adds campaign movement, product benefits and a stronger branded message. One supports retail operations; the other supports in-store communication.
ESL displays the current price, product code and operational information below the product.
E-paper POP sits beside or around selected products to present benefits and branded visual movement.
Both retain a paper-like, reflective appearance and consume very little power between visual changes.
Accurate shelf information and stronger campaign communication can coexist in one retail experience.
One shelf, two communication layers
Price and product information stay clear at the shelf edge.
Motion and printed artwork bring attention to selected products.
Together: information accuracy plus campaign impact
Common questions
FAQ
Is an E-paper POP display the same as an electronic shelf label?
No. Both can use E Ink technology, but graphic ESLs normally use a dot-matrix display for changing data, while SoliDisplay E-paper POP uses flexible predefined segments for campaign visuals.
Which E Ink color technologies can be used for ESL?
ESL products can use black-and-white E-paper as well as color platforms such as Spectra 3000 and Spectra 3100. Selected newer ESL and retail signage formats can also use Spectra 6.
Can ESL and E-paper POP displays be used in the same store?
Yes. ESL can manage accurate shelf information across many products, while E-paper POP can add a larger branded message around selected launches, promotions or priority products.
Can segmented E-paper display any new image?
Segmented E-paper switches predefined shapes rather than rendering an unrestricted pixel image. The segment pattern, visual sequence and printed overlay are therefore designed around the campaign before production.
